Culverts as barriers to Atlantic salmon migration

Recipient: St. Mary’s River Association
Project Title: Culverts as barriers to Atlantic salmon migration
Project Location: St. Mary’s River, Nova Scotia
Approved Grant Amount for 2009: $7,500

Summary:
A lead researcher, in collaboration with a variety of other field staff (9 other assistants in total) assessed 99 culverts as barriers to fish migration in the St. Mary’s River. In the proposal we were also to priorize those culverts and design a restoration plan. The final report will include barriers of all forms (waterfalls, debris jams, beaver dams, and culverts) as an overall access restoration plan; culverts will form one part of this larger scheme.
