January Newsletter 2018

January 22, 2018

We are excited to start 2018 as our twelfth year of operation as a wild Atlantic salmon conservation organization and our 11th year in providing conservation project funding. It’s very rewarding to observe the many ways in which we have grown as an organization that is totally committed to supporting the conservation of Canada’s wild Atlantic salmon.

This year, as in all previous granting years, we received a record number of 96 one-year and multi-year project funding proposals. Importantly, these proposals represent a record demand of $2.5 million in project funding. This increased demand clearly indicates the major need (read: opportunity) for project funding. In 2018, we will be granting a nearly $1.1 million thanks to strong performance of our trust fund and the solid corporate partnerships with NB Liquor Corporation and CN. All in all, 2018 will be another year in which we set new performance records helping support community groups, First Nations, and researchers working to save Atlantic salmon populations.

This month we celebrate staff member Allyson Heustis who has recently joined us as our newest Conservation Projects Coordinator. Allyson is a graduate of the St. Francis Xavier’s Science Program in biology, and has recently earned her Masters of Science (Biology) from UNB. Allyson arrives with many contacts in the salmon conservation domain and is quite excited to become part of the Foundation. She is looking forward to working closely with our advisory committees in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador and PEI, and the many recipient groups in those provinces.

We are also recognizing the Central Queens Branch of the PEI Wildlife Federation (CQWF), a long-term PEI conservation partner. The CQWF is focussing its efforts on the West and Clyde Rivers, located mid-island, with the goal of restoring the rivers and surrounding environment back to a former state where a sustainable and an abundant population of Atlantic salmon and brook trout populations can thrive. This is excellent work and we anticipate continued great results from the CQWF.

I shall take this opportunity to wish you and yours a safe, healthy, and productive 2018!

Yours in conservation,

Stephen Chase
